ANNUAL OUTDOOR KANSAS CITY FASHION SHOW WELCOMES DESIGNERS BASED AROUND THE GLOBE–
Crossroads Arts District’s Eighth Annual West 18th Street Fashion Show features designers based in Kansas City, New York City and Paris

Kansas City, MO – June 14, 2008 – The top fashion designers of Kansas City, and beyond, will take center stage during the highly anticipated eighth annual West 18th Street Fashion Show.

This year’s free, outdoor event, Summer at Sea, will bring together both established and emerging designers to feature eighteen collections.  Summer at Sea will be held at dusk (approximately 8pm) on June 14, 2008, on the block of West 18th Street, between Wyandotte Street and Baltimore Avenue.

As the amount of spectators at the annual runway show has grown throughout the years, so has the amount of competition to participate. This increased level of competition has allowed the event to welcome applicants from well beyond Kansas City.

“Not only did we receive more designer applications than ever, but they were coming from all over the map– Texas, Maryland, Wisconsin, New York, even Paris!” says Executive Producer, Ashlee Broome.  “It’s amazing that people from all over the world are starting to see our runway event as a unique and worthwhile fashion opportunity.”

To help with the most challenging designer selection to date, the event organizers– the 18th Street merchant, birdies– appointed the First Annual Designer Selection Committee to handpick the final designers.  Members of this inaugural panel included boutique owner, Miriam Garvey; hair salon owner, Amber Hodgson; and costume designer, Jon Fulton Adams

Says Peregrine Honig, co-owner of birdies, “We wanted to give the final decision to a panel of well-respected and visible Kansas Citians for two reasons: to avoid any impression of nepotism and to really have our runway represent the looks, styles and tastes of a broader array of  Kansas City residents.”

This year’s selection panel chose such well-traveled and experienced designers as Betsy Blodgett, who attended London College of FashionHadley Johnson, who attends Parsons School of Design in Paris; and NYC-based Jovana Mirabile, who has worked with both Project Runway finalist, Kara Janx, and world-renowned designer, Alexander McQueen.

The inception of the Sprint Center and the close proximity of the newly rehabbed Power and Light District are helping to supplement the KC Crossroad’s long-standing challenge of getting people downtown.

“Since day one, it’s always been a goal of the 18th Street Fashion Show to remind people that they can live, work, play and, especially, shop downtown,” says co-owner of birdies, Corrie Van Ausdal.  “It’s truer now, more than ever.  And now we’re bringing designers from around the globe to show that our event is one of the most highly-anticipated and stylish KC traditions for a reason.”

Sponsors of the event include Nicholson Group RealtyDST SystemsBoveri RealtyPresent Magazine and United Missouri Bank.

The event is free and open to the public.  There will be a limited number of VIP runway tickets available.
